Mid-Week Inspiration: Corrie Jones

Here’s another great layout from our Design Team!

I have always made New Years resolutions in the typical sense, you know like losing weight, eating better, saving more money, etc., but I have not always done a great job sticking with them. It is really easy for life to get in the way! For 2011, I wanted to do something different. 2011 is more about personal growth from the inside for me, rather than from the outside. I wanted my resolutions to remind me of who I really am. So here are my resolutions for 2011!

For this challenge I used the following criteria:

1. I used a Ki calendar for the background.

2. I used paint (instead of ink) for my stamping the word “create”.

3. I used stitching on my layout. The calendar is stitched around the edges for decoration, but I also used my sewing machine to stitch the word smile to help it stand out and keep it from floating. I also used rub on stitches through the word “daily”.

Materials: Patterned paper: Sassafras Lass designed for Studio Calico #SC10001 and #SC10002, Studio Calico “Swatch” and “Digits”, Shabby Green Door “Flutter”, and Ki “Lagoon Calendar”

Embellishments: Ki hip chip white graph alpha, Cosmo Cricket tiny type alphas, Ki scribble glitter boarders, Ki tattoos, October Afternoon mini market alpha, American Crafts bones and marquise alphas, Pink Paislee mini alpha, star pin, Sassafras Lass in a stitch blossoms, American Crafts mixtape, random gold rub on stitches

Stamps: Studio Calico “create” stamp

Paint: Jenni Bowlin paint dabbers in lemon drops

Mid Week Inspiration

Check out this fab project by Lorrie for some inspiration from January Challenge #1!  Thanks Lorrie!

This challenge was fantastic! Like most people, I usually make New Year’s resolutions, but have a hard time keeping them. This year I decided it would be different; rather than several resolutions, I made just one that I hope will lead me to living my best life.

I used these challenge criteria:

1. Use a calendar.  I pulled  page out of a blank “design-your-own” calendar that I picked up in the Target “Dollar Spot” a couple of years ago.

2. Use paint somewhere on your layout. I printed my journaling on a transparency, then painted the back of the transparency with acrylic paint.

3. Attach something with needle and thread. I used Bazzill “In Stitch’z” floss to attach the edge of my calendar and one of my title letters.

Materials list:

Paper: GCD Studios “Homespun Chic”, Target calendar

Ink and paint: ColorBox Chalk Ink (Charcoal), Anita’s acrylic craft paint (Morning Blue and Medium Blue)

Embellishments: Colorbok/ Heidi Grace Designs Alphabet Punch-Outs; 7Gypsies “97% Complete Stickers “Year”; Die Cuts with a View printable tranparency; Bazzill In Stitch’z sewing floss (Sunbeam); GCD Studios Homespun Chic die-cut border

From the Design Team Vault

First off, let me just put out a quick reminder:  If you haven’t left a comment on the post before this one, go on over and do it so that you are entered for the random draw.  We’ll draw once the site reaches 100 members (click here to go to that post and leave a comment)!

Now, then.  As you probably know we’re in a transition here and are getting things lined up for a new start in January.  Until then, we thought you’d like to see some of the amazing projects our design team submitted but that didn’t make it to the site due to that transition.

Even though there isn’t a current challenge, we hated to think these great layouts would languish in the land of un-posted goodies.  They’re too cute not to post!  Both are on the theme “Whistle While You Work,” about a chore and why you love or hate it.

There are lots of chores around the house that I would really rather not do! I really don’t care for yard work or laundry. Although, I am extremely picky about how the laundry is done so I guess I am the one stuck doing it. Let’s just put it this way, I would rather scrub toilets than do laundry and I have 4 toilets so that says a lot! Since I am not a big fan of mowing the lawn either I decided to do my layout about my son, Eric, learning how to mow the lawn for me. I used options number 1 and 4 for this layout.  Since this is my son, I made my own Cinderella word…Cinder-Dude. I love this collection from Basic Grey, it’s great for boys! I painted the buttons with bronze paint to make them match the paper. I love the texture on these buttons from our sponsor Charlene’s Button Box.

Sponsor Supplies Used:

Cardstock: Discount Cardstock “Clove Felt 12×12, Brilliant White 80# 8 1/2 x 11
Paint: Plaid Apple Barrel Colors Craft Paint “Pure Bronze #20763″
Button: Charlene’s Button Box “Yellow Square”

Additional Supplies Used:

Paper: Basic Grey “Max & Whiskers Collection”
Ink: Distress Ink “Tea Dye & Wild Honey”
Embellishments: American Crafts Thickers “Daydream”, safety pin and twill from my stash
Tools: Stampin Up Punches

Journaling:

Feeding Time: Oreo is so happy to find fresh food & water in his bowl — & he’s so cute when he washes himself afterward. Naturally, I don’t mind making sure he has a belly full of goodness when it’s time to eat.

Scooping Time: The litter box is a necessary evil as far as I’m concerned… Kitties need it, but ew. Just ew. Luckily, having cats who like to run around outside means not having to scoop all the time…

Chosen Criteria:

1. Use at least 2 photos that represent your household tasks.
2. Use a paper-tearing technique somewhere in your page design.

Techniques:

To create the playfully distressed look seen on my background paper (kitty claw marks!), I simply poked small scissors through it and tore random, jagged lines. I adhered a scrap of Clove Felt cardstock behind the patterned paper, making sure it was big enough to cover all gashes, and then stitched a repetitive, stenciled damask design over both paper and cardstock.

The mass of thread is composed of scraps I collected with this kind of use in mind; it wasn’t until this layout that I pulled them all out, clumped them together, and followed my plan.

I layered the American Crafts stickers for a more personalized look.

Sponsored supplies used:

* Cardstock: Discount Cardstock “Clove Felt 80# 12×12,” “Kraft Cardstock 80# 12×12”
* Polymer clay buttons: Charlene’s Button Box “Large Teal Bird Buttons”

Additional supplies used:

* Paper: Cloud 9 Design “All-In-One Paper Craft Kit: Cat;” Alpha: American Crafts “Thickers: Vera (Black Vinyl);” Stickers: American Crafts “Remarks: Catnip Glitter Accents & Phrases,” “Remarks: Dog Bone Glitter Accents & Phrases,” Studio Calico “Anthology: fabRips;” Other: Thread

Our next yummy layout comes from Kas Mello!

I am not sure this is my all time favorite recipe but it was given to me by a dear friend. She was quite ill at the time, but had made this for me knowing how much I LOVE zucchini and squash. Not long after this, we lost her in a car accident, but I will never forget her loving heart. She had gotten the recipe from the paper and made me this copy when I told her how much I enjoyed it. Thanks Melanie!

The flower is made from wax paper which I got in my Gauche Alchemy Wholly Sheets kit. It is edged with Copic Marker. I also used the marker to highlight the wrinkles that I crushed into it. The Copic worked quite nicely on the wax paper. The paint design on the paper was made using Gauche Alchemy Punchinella as a mask.

“Favorite Recipe Challenge”
Kas chose the following options in hers:
3. Make a copy of the original recipe, or hand write the recipe on a card and include it on your layout. (this is the one handed to me)

A Goodbye, A Hello & Some Mid-Week Inspiration

As with any team, sometimes we have to say goodbye to faces we’ve come to love, and sometimes we get to say hello to shiny, new faces!  This week, we are sad to say goodbye to Michelle Sanders.  Michelle has had some wonderful opportunities arise, and is leaving us to begin this exciting new journey.  We hate to see Michelle go and we will miss her fun and inspiring pages, but we’re excited for her just the same.

To fill the empty seat left by Michelle, we are very happy to introduce you to Kristina Harmon.  Here’s a little bit about Kristina in her own words:

“Hi there, my name is Kristina and I am a 39 year old wife, mom, and nanny. I love doing paper crafts and have been scrapbooking on and off for years, but I started to get really serious about it a year ago. My days are filled with drool, bottles, diapers, cooking, cleaning, fur and of course crafting, but I couldn’t do any of it without coffee! I love being a part of the online crafting community, it provides me with so much inspiration and support. You can learn more about me on my blog called Kristina’s World.”

Here is the layout that Kristina made for this week’s challenge, the “About Me” challenge.

This layout was a lot of fun, however finding a picture with just me in it was a challenge! Making the title out of letters cut from a magazine was something I had never considered doing before, but I love the result and it couldn’t have been easier. I have a feeling that will be something you might see from me again in the future. I also really enjoy having my own handwriting on the journaling spots. I think it is important to leave samples of it behind for my family, present and future, something that I hope my family will treasure forever.

Supplies Used:
Card stock: Bazzill; Paper: Basic Grey “Kioshi” collection, Sassafras “Pocket full of Rosies” collection; Tools: Cricut “Accent Essentials,” Dymo Letra Tag Label Maker; Buttons: Stampin Up “Brights” collection; Alphas: cut from magazine; Divider tab: Avery; Misc: 1″ Circle Punch, Generic index cards for journaling; Foam adhesive dots: Stampin Up

First, Kas Mellow tells us why she is a fan of the color green.

“Green to me is everything wonderful, fresh, clean, healthy & relaxing.

I just had to use the Discount Cardstock Diamonds Parakeet for the background paper! (it’s my favorite!)

I used For the love of art stamps to stamps the hearts of the vellum. I used the word “heart” from the set also. I used a Zig Writer to add some doodles and journaling.”

4. Create hand-doodling somewhere on your page.

I love the color (of course) and the toggle buttons are a must have for this jacket!!! I wish they made it in my size!! I would have one just like hers! Lol!! I don’t think she would appreciate that though!

I used the word Green in my title and in my journaling I am talking to the reader and to my favorite colored coat. I also hand doodled the glitter trail! Lol!! Unfortunately the trail didn’t turn out like I wanted it to.”

Mid Week Inspiration: September Challenge #4

Hi everyone!  Here we are, mid-way through yet another week, and it’s time for our mid-week inspiration.  This week, we are focusing on September challenge #4, the “Holiday paper challenge”.  This challenge is centered around using holiday-themed papers for non-holiday themed layouts.

First, Angela Pruitt shows us some of the more unusual sights from Savannah, GA using the Graphic 45 “Hallowe’en in Wonderland” collection…

I love the bold and bright colors and designs of the new Graphic 5 “Hallowe’en in Wonderland” collection, and I think they can easily work with any number of non-Halloween project ideas. For this page, I used some of the more non-traditional photos I took in Savannah, GA (usually known for it’s very proper Southern personality!) They were perfect paired with the bold designs of the Graphic 45 papers.

Prompts used:
2. Use punches or a die-cut machine to hand-make embellishments or letters out of patterned paper for your page.
3. Use pop-dots to give 3-D dimension to an element of your page.

Supplies Used:
Cardstock: Discount Cardstock “Ivory Ribbon 105# 12×12“; Paper: Graphic 45 “Hallowe’en In Wonderland: Square Hare, Uncommon Nonsense, Hallowe’en in Wonderland Borders”; Embellishments: Riff Raff Designs “Sugar Skull chipboard”; Tools: Provo Craft Cricut Expression machine, “Opposites Attract” cartridge; Pen: American Crafts Slick Writer “Black Fine tip”

Techniques:
1. I used my American Crafts Slick Writer with the fine tip to hand-draw stitching around the edge of the ivory cardstock.
2. Although I left the majority of the chipboard pieces “naked”, I popped out the eyes and added some color via chalk ink, and then popped them back in to add a little colorful detail.

Next, Kas Mellow has made a lovely card using the Graphic 45 “Christmas Past” collection…

I made a card for this challenge because I had a beautiful pearlized porcelain card from Discount Cardstock to use. The Graphic 45 Christmas Past collection had the most wonderful sentiment for the idea, so I used it inside. I used my Cricut to cut out the title on the front, but used the negative image. The main image on the front is backed with cream vellum to help show-off the fact that it is raised off the card.

I am going to send the card to Operation Write Home for a soldier to send home to their loved one.

Prompts used:
2. Use punches or a die-cut machine to hand-make embellishments or letters out of patterned paper for your page. ( I used the negative image)
3. Use pop-dots to give 3-D dimension to an element of your page.

Supplies Used:

Cardstock: Discount Cardstock “Pearlized porcelain card, Cream vellum, Clove felt cardstock“; Paper: Graphic 45 “Christmas Past Collection”; Tools: Provo Craft Cricut, Sure Cuts a Lot software; Ink: Colorbox “Dark Brown Chalking Ink”; Adhesive: Plaid Foam Dots

Mid Week Inspiration: September Challenge #3

Hello there, and welcome to another Mid-Week Inspiration at Better Living Through Scrapbooking.  This week, we have two additional layouts made using the 3rd September challenge, the hilarious “Fashion Disaster” challenge.

First, Kas Mello tells us about her life-long battle with taming her wild hair!

For this challenge I included the following:

2. Use fabric or canvas on your page(s).
3. Use one larger and two smaller photo on your page.
4. Use ribbon in a fun and/or unusual way on your page

I have huge hair and my choices always seemed to be long and wavy, permed, or a ponytail. Nothing could tame my mane. Now with my hair straightener I have so many more choices. I LOVE it. This picture could have qualified for the last challenge with the quality, but it was a fun evening and the only picture I had from it. I “lifted” a technique from Angela on the right side paper.

Journaling:

“For me, everyday used to be a “Bad Hair Day”. I have huge uneven waves of thick hair. I could never have the cool style because my hair had a mind of its own. Then came…..SOLIA! Oh how I love you my dear Solia hair straightener! I too can now have smooth shiny hair. Like straw to silk.”

Supplies Used:

Cardstock: Discount Cardstock “Really Red Cardstock 80# 12×12, Kraft 80# 12×12, Surf Blue Vellum 12×12“; Paper: Graphic 45 “Fashionista Collection”; Tools: Cuttlebug embossing houndstouth embossing folder, Cricut with Sure Cuts a Lot software for title; Embellishments: Gauche Alchemy Flowers and snap; Misc: Foam squares, scrap ribbon

Next, Angela Pruitt shares a family photo that has been hidden away for a very long time!

Ahhhh, the early 80s.  Who can blame us for fashion disasters?  After all, we had just escaped from the era of DISCO!  I have no idea who snapped this photo of me, my mom and my brother.  I do know the photo was taken at our local mall, which seems somehow ironic, considering all the fashion rules we were breaking in the photo.  :)

Supplies used:

Cardstock:  Discount Cardstock “Kraft 80# 12×12, Natural Smooth 80# 12×12“; Papers:  Graphic 45 “Domestic Goddess: Quilting Bee, Domestic Goddess Alphabet die-cuts”; Paint: Plaid “Apple Barrel: Antique White, English Navy“; Alphabet: American Crafts Thickers; Embellishments:  Jilibean Soup journaling spots, Riff Raff chipboard casette tape, Kiki Art “Fun Tape”; Misc: fabric tape, chipboard arrows

Challenge prompts used:

1.  Use an old-school photo of yourself

2.  Use fabric or canvas on your project.

Mid Week Inspiration: September Challenge #2

Happy Wednesday, everyone!  Hopefully everyone is enjoying their week so far.  If you’re in need of some crafty inspiration, you’ve come to the right place!  Today, we have two additional project ideas using the Better Living Through Scrapbooking September Challenge #2 – the “bad photo” challenge.  The object of this challenge is to use photos that didn’t turn out quite as you had expected – whether blurry, too light or too dark, or had other obvious problems, but still deserved to be scrapped.  :)

Our first layout is a Halloween page from Kas Mello!

“Definitely a bad photo. It was a dark and rainy Oregon Halloween (shocker). The flash reflected oddly off the raindrops. I used a clear Halloween sticker directly on my photo. I used paint and applied it with my finger to give it a messy no brushstroke look around the moon. The moon is from inked mulberry paper. I used a bookplate (mini-journaling) block from the G45 collection.”

Supplies used:

Cardstock: Discount Cardstock “Midnight Black 80# 12×12, Flame Metallic 12×12, Orange Vellum 12×12, Pink Mulberry paper 8 1/2×11“; Patterned Paper: Graphic 45 “Hallowe’en in Wonderland Collection: Through the Looking Glass, Curiouser and Curiouser, Uncommon Nonsense, You’re Late, Hallowe’en in Wonderland – Borders,” “On the Boardwalk Collection: Seaside Chic”; Embellishments: Gauche Alchemy “Orange Punchinella,” miscellaneous plastic spider; Ink: QuickQuotes Powderpuff Chalking Ink “Mocha Mama”; Pen: Galaxy Marker “Orange”; Adhesive: Beacon “3-in-1 Craft Adhesive”

Next is a fun summer layout from Angela Pruitt.

“Yep, this is a bad photo.  I believe this photo had good intentions, but as this was before the era of digital photography (and long before I acquired my current level of photography skills!) it’s obvious I pressed the shutter button and just hoped for the best.  So instead of a cute photo of my son swimming in the pool, I have the above photo of my Summer Squinter!”

Supplies Used:

Cardstock: Discount Cardstock “Kraft 80# 12×12“; Patterned Paper:  Graphic 45 “On the Boardwalk: She Sells Seashells, Life’s a Beach, Coney Island, By The Beautiful Sea, On the Boardwalk Tags”; Embellishments:  American Crafts Thickers, SEI alphabet stickers “Chocolate Milk”; Paint: Making Memories

Challenge prompts used:

- Use paint in a messy or unusual way
- Use a handmade journaling spot

Technique:

To make the “Sun”, I freehand cut strips from the Discount Cardstock kraft paper.  I then painted them with a “pounce” technique using Making Memories yellow scrap paint.  After the strips were dry, I cut notches in the end of each of the sun “rays” and curled them around the tiny end of one of my paintbrushes.
